The people involved

Of course, the people involved in a community organisation are the key to its success!

Not-for-profit community organisations often involve a unique combination of people including volunteers, employees, members, directors or committee of management member, executive or management team members, independent contractors or consultants and (for some) clients. Many of the legal issues that community organisations face relate to the various legal rights, roles, responsibilities, safety and liability of these different groups of people.

This section of the PilchConnect website is designed to provide not-for-profit community organisations with information about the legal issues that may arise for each of these groups. Our resources are continually expanding, but for now we have included resources about:

Working with children checks

In Victoria, working with children checks are mandatory for organisations and individuals undertaking child-related work. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in penalties for the organisation and the employee or volunteer that has failed to undergo the check. PilchConnect has composed a Guide to assist Victorian not-for-profit community organisations to understand their legal obligations in relation to these checks. For more information on how your community organisation can comply with the working with children check scheme, please follow the below link to our Guide.

A note about this website!

The PilchConnect website is continually developing. We will be updating and adding to the information as we continue to help Victorian not-for-profits with their legal issues.

If you want to provide feedback about the contents on the site, or suggest future legal topics, please provide Feedback to PilchConnect. If you want to know more about our work see About PilchConnect.

Note: The information on this website is intended as a guide only, and is not legal advice. If you or your organisation has a legal problem you should talk to a lawyer before making a decision about what to do. The information is written for people and organisations resident in, or affected by, the laws that apply in Victoria, Australia and is current at 1 October 2008.
